The full review

Boots' own-brand TENS Maternity Unit is deliberately simple. It has two preset modes, one for between contractions and a boost mode you switch to during them, and it comes with batteries, pads and a storage pouch. Boots says it's the only TENS in its range suitable for use in labour.

Its biggest advantage is availability: you can Click & Collect from Boots stores, which helps if you've left things late. Reviews on Boots' own site average 4.7 out of 5 from about 120 ratings, although Boots flags that 29 of those reviewers received an incentive. Mumsnet's roundup likes its simplicity but notes it has fewer features than its rivals.

Boots' safety list is clear: not before 37 weeks, not with a pacemaker or other implanted electrical device, check first if you have a heart condition or epilepsy, no pads on your abdomen, and never in the bath or shower.

At around £40 it's reasonable, but the TensCare Perfect mamaTENS gives you more programmes and intensity steps for less, and you can't hire the Boots unit.
