Buying guide

Do you need a bottle warmer?

Not necessarily. If your baby will take expressed milk cold, you can skip one entirely, and a jug of warm water does the same job more slowly and less predictably. Warmers make most sense if you're regularly feeding expressed milk from the fridge or freezer, or if someone else (a partner, a grandparent) is doing night feeds and you want a routine that's hard to get wrong.

Smart sensors and auto shut-off

The most useful improvement in recent years is warmers that read the milk's starting temperature, adjust the heating time to suit, then hold it at feeding temperature or switch off. Philips' 2-in-1 and Premium Fast warmers work this way, and Baby Brezza's home warmer uses presets for volume, starting temperature and bottle material. Simpler dial warmers leave the timing to you, so it's easier to overheat milk if you get distracted. Whatever you use, test on your wrist.

Water bath or steam?

Most home warmers use a water bath: the bottle sits in heated water, which is gentle and even. Philips' 2-in-1 works this way, and so does Baby Brezza's Steady Warm mode, which it recommends for breast milk. Steam is quicker, and Baby Brezza reserves its steam Quick Warm mode for formula and baby food. Portable warmers either heat milk in their own insulated cup or warm the bottle directly from a battery.

Portable warmers: breast milk yes, powdered formula no

Battery warmers from Baby Brezza, Momcozy and Tommee Tippee are genuinely useful for expressed milk or ready-made formula on the go. Some are also marketed for warming water to mix with formula, but water at 37 to 40C won't kill bacteria in powdered formula. The NHS advice for feeds away from home is a full, sealed vacuum flask of just-boiled water (it stays above 70C for several hours) plus pre-measured powder, or a carton of ready-to-feed formula. If formula is your main use, see our guide to formula prep machines.

Check your bottles fit

Wide-neck bottles, glass bottles and breast milk bags don't suit every warmer. Tommee Tippee's LetsGo portable warmer doesn't take glass bottles, for example, while Baby Brezza's home warmer and SuperFast portable are designed to take milk storage bags. If you've already chosen a bottle brand, check it's on the warmer's compatibility list.

Questions parents ask

Can I warm a baby's bottle in the microwave?

No. The NHS says never to warm formula in a microwave because it can heat unevenly and burn your baby's mouth, and not to heat or defrost breast milk in a microwave or on the hob for the same reason.

Does my baby need warm milk?

Not necessarily. The NHS says you can give expressed breast milk straight from the fridge if your baby is happy to drink it cold, or warm it to body temperature by standing the bottle in a jug of warm water or holding it under running warm water. A warmer just does that more consistently.

How long can I keep warmed breast milk?

The NHS says that once your baby has drunk from a bottle of breast milk, it should be used within an hour and anything left over thrown away. Don't re-freeze milk that has been defrosted.

Can I use a bottle warmer to make up powdered formula?

No. Powdered formula needs to be made up with water at 70C or above to kill any bacteria in the powder, and bottle warmers, including portable ones sold for warming water, heat to around 40C at most. Use them for expressed milk and ready-made feeds.

How should I defrost frozen breast milk?

The NHS says it's best to defrost it slowly in the fridge. If you need it straight away, you can defrost it in a jug of warm water or under running warm water. Several warmers here have defrost settings, and Baby Brezza's home warmer takes frozen milk bags. Never use a microwave.
