The report card

  1. Sterilising method30% of score6.5

Tommee Tippee cites tests showing its UV kills viruses and 99.9% of harmful bacteria, but UV only reaches surfaces the light can see, and NHS guidance doesn't list it.

Sterilises and dries six bottles in 35 minutes, silently, with a storage function.

  3. Capacity & fit15% of score7.0

Six bottles, plus soothers and pump parts.

  4. Upkeep & running costs15% of score8.0

No water means no descaling, and Tommee Tippee says it's its most energy-efficient steriliser.

  5. Value for money20% of score5.8

Around £130 is steep next to steam models that do the job for half the price.

The full review

The Ultra UV is the steriliser Tommee Tippee calls its best, and it takes a different route: ultraviolet light instead of steam. There's no water to fill, no limescale to deal with and no noise, and Tommee Tippee says it sterilises and dries six bottles in 35 minutes, then keeps them in a sterile storage mode.

Tommee Tippee says the UV kills viruses and 99.9% of harmful bacteria, citing tests to a European standard, and its own testing found it the most energy-efficient of its sterilisers. Those are real advantages.

The limitation is physics. UV works by line of sight, so anything shaded, such as a crevice in a pump part, gets less exposure, and bottles need to be properly clean first. NHS sterilising guidance covers steam, cold-water solution and boiling, and doesn't mention UV. That doesn't make UV unsafe, but it's why I rank it below steam here.

At around £130 (against an RRP of £149.99), it also costs twice as much as the Philips Advanced.
