Head-to-head

Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro (2024) vs Honor Pad X8a Kids Edition

Amazon Fire HD 8 Kids Pro (2024)7.9Around £150Amazon

Honor Pad X8a Kids Edition7.7Around £150Amazon

The short answer

Both cost around £150, but they take different routes. The Fire HD 8 Kids Pro is Amazon's all-in-one package for six to 12-year-olds: a slim case, a two-year worry-free guarantee, a year of Amazon Kids+ and the Parent Dashboard, which is about as easy as parental controls get. The Honor Pad X8a Kids is an Android tablet with far more hardware for the money: an 11-inch 90Hz screen against an 8-inch HD one, 128GB of storage against 32GB, a silicone case and a stylus, and no subscription to pay.

The trade-off is set-up and support. Honor relies on Google Kids Space and Family Link, which work well but take more thought to configure, especially if you open up wider app access. Its breakage cover is a one-time replacement within two years through Honor Care+ when you buy direct, an offer that may change, while Amazon's guarantee is part of the package. Amazon Kids+ does cost extra after the first year, though.

My call: the Fire HD 8 Kids Pro for most families, because the controls and guarantee are simpler. Choose the Honor if you already use Family Link and your child watches a lot of video, where the bigger screen earns its keep.
