Braun ThermoScan 3 (IRT3030) review

A cheap, quick Braun ear thermometer that skips the features that make the 7+ worth having.

The report card

  1. Accuracy & reliability30% of score7.5

Clinically validated according to Braun, but without the pre-warmed tip used on the ThermoScan 7+.

  2. Suitability by age20% of score7.5

Ear readings suit NICE guidance from 4 weeks, but there's no age-adjusted fever guidance.

  3. Ease of use20% of score8.0

One button and a 1-second reading.

  4. Night-time use10% of score5.5

No night mode, and the fever alert is a series of beeps.

  5. Fever guidance & memory10% of score6.5

Beeps once for normal, twice for elevated and four times for high, and recalls the last reading.

  6. Value & running costs10% of score8.0

Often under £20, though it still uses disposable caps.

The full review

The ThermoScan 3 is Braun's entry-level ear thermometer. It takes a reading in a second, has a single button and tells you roughly where you stand with beeps: one for normal, two for elevated and four for high. It recalls the last reading and comes with 21 hygiene caps.

What you lose compared with the ThermoScan 7+ is the clever stuff: no pre-warmed tip, no Age Precision colour coding and no night mode. That last one matters more than it sounds. If you're checking a toddler who has just dropped off, four loud beeps are the opposite of helpful.

It's still a proper ear thermometer from the brand most UK pharmacies stock, and prices swing a lot, so it's worth waiting for a deal. The usual ear-thermometer caveats apply: NICE recommends underarm readings for babies under 4 weeks, and the NHS warns that ear readings can mislead if the probe isn't positioned properly.

Pros and cons

What I like

  • Very quick one-button readings
  • Often available for under £20
  • Audible fever indicator

What I don't

  • No pre-warmed tip or Age Precision
  • No night mode, and the beeps can wake a sleeping child
  • Needs a fresh cap for every reading
