The full review
The ThermoScan 7+ is the current version of Braun's long-running ThermoScan 7 ear thermometer, and it's the one UK parenting sites and pharmacies most often point you to. It measures the infrared heat from the eardrum in a few seconds, using a tip that Braun pre-warms to reduce the cooling effect of the probe in the ear canal. An ExacTemp light and beep confirm when it's positioned properly.
Its cleverest feature is Age Precision. You choose one of three age bands (0 to 3 months, 3 to 36 months, or over 3 years) and the display turns green, yellow or red according to what counts as a fever at that age. That's genuinely useful when you're exhausted and second-guessing a number. Night mode mutes the beeps and switches on a small light, so you can check a sleeping child without flicking on the big light.
The catches are the ones that come with any ear thermometer. The NHS points out that ear readings can mislead if the probe isn't placed correctly, which is easier to get wrong with a small ear. Braun's manual says it isn't intended for pre-term or small-for-gestational-age babies, and NICE recommends an underarm reading for babies under 4 weeks anyway. You'll also need a fresh cap for every reading: 21 come in the box, and a 40-pack costs around £9.
Owner ratings are consistently strong, with an average of 4.8 stars from 184 reviews across three UK retailers on trolley.co.uk. Mother&Baby and MadeForMums both include it in their 2026 round-ups, praising its speed and age-adjusted guidance while noting the price and that the beeps can disturb a sleeping baby if you forget night mode.
Pros and cons

- Ear method accepted by NICE from 4 weeks to 5 years
What I don't
- NICE recommends underarm readings for babies under 4 weeks, so newborns still need a stick
