Nanit Breathing Wear review

No sensors, no batteries, just patterned cotton, as long as you already have the camera to read it.

The report card

  1. Alert reliability25% of score6.8

Reviewers say the breathing tracking does the job, but it depends on your Wi-Fi and the camera seeing the pattern.

  2. Certification & claims20% of score5.0

Not a medical device, and Nanit doesn't claim it is; treat it as a reassurance feature.

  3. Fit & wearability15% of score9.0

Soft, washable cotton with nothing to clip, charge or stick on.

  4. Getting the alert to you20% of score7.4

Alerts go to the camera and the Nanit app, with no separate parent unit.

  5. Value & running costs20% of score6.5

Cheap if you already own the camera, expensive if you don't.

The full review

Nanit's Breathing Wear is the odd one out here because it contains no electronics at all. The Breathing Band, Swaddle and Sleeping Bag are 100% cotton, printed with a pattern that the Nanit Pro camera reads to track your baby's breathing motion, sending real-time alerts to the camera and the Nanit app.

That makes it the most comfortable wearable in this roundup. There's nothing to clip on, charge or stick down, it's machine-washable, and the band fits over most pyjamas and sleeping bags up to 24 months. Nanit says the swaddle is meant for newborns who aren't yet rolling; the band and sleeping bag carry on after that.

The catch is the camera. Breathing Wear only works with a Nanit Pro, which typically costs £249 to £299 depending on the mount, and it relies on your Wi-Fi and on the camera being able to see the pattern. Some of Nanit's extra sleep analytics also sit behind its paid Insights plan.

It isn't sold as a medical device, so think of it as a reassurance feature of a well-regarded smart camera rather than a breathing monitor in the medical sense. Reviewers who use it rate it well: Mother&Baby named the Nanit Pro its best breathing monitor with a breathing band, and Fathercraft found both the band and the patterned sleepwear do the job.
