The full review

The 2024 Fire HD 8 Kids is Amazon's standard 8-inch tablet wrapped in a thick, grippy Kid-Proof Case, with a year of Amazon Kids+ and a two-year worry-free guarantee: if it breaks, Amazon replaces it. It's designed for three to seven-year-olds, and Mumsnet names it the best tablet for toddlers.

The parental controls are the reason to buy. Through Amazon's free Parent Dashboard you can set daily limits and bedtimes, filter content by age, approve or refuse app requests, pause the tablet remotely and control web browsing (hand-picked sites only, a filtered web, or none at all). The Independent's testers had the near-identical Kids Pro version running in about five minutes, with profiles for up to three children.

The 2024 refresh brought more memory (Amazon says 50% more RAM across the range), a 5MP rear camera and up to 13 hours of battery. It's still not fast: the 8-inch HD screen is fine for children's apps and videos, but it isn't built for demanding games.

After the free year, Amazon Kids+ costs roughly £4 to £7 a month depending on whether you have Prime. You don't have to renew: the tablet and its parental controls keep working without it.
