Levoit Core 300S Smart Air Purifier review

Quiet, properly specified and sensibly priced: the purifier I'd put in a nursery.

The report card

  1. Hygiene & nursery safety25% of score9.0

No water tank to grow anything nasty, and a three-stage filter with a HEPA layer.

  2. Humidity & air-quality control20% of score8.5

A laser PM2.5 sensor drives an auto mode, with app control and scheduling.

  3. Output for a nursery15% of score8.5

A CADR of 258m³/h is far more than a typical nursery needs, so it can run on low.

  4. Night-time noise & light20% of score8.5

Sleep mode runs at a claimed 22dB and switches the display lights off.

  5. Price & running costs20% of score7.0

    A £29.99 filter every 6 to 8 months adds roughly £45 to £60 a year.

The full review

The Core 300S is a compact cylindrical purifier with a three-stage filter (a pre-filter, a HEPA layer and activated carbon), a laser dust sensor that shows PM2.5 readings on the front, and an auto mode that ramps up when the air gets worse. It connects to Levoit's VeSync app for schedules and remote control, and works with Alexa and Google Assistant.

For a nursery, two numbers matter. Its clean air delivery rate is 258m³/h, which Levoit says covers up to 100m² once an hour, so in a small bedroom it can tick over on a low setting. And sleep mode is rated at 22dB with the display lights off, which is very quiet. Mumsnet's reviewer rated it for app control, quiet mode and effective purification, while noting that replacement filters are pricey and the power cord is short.

Running costs are the main consideration. Levoit says to replace the filter every 6 to 8 months, and a standard replacement costs £29.99 (specialist versions cost more), so budget £45 to £60 a year.

Be clear-eyed about what it can do. It filters particles such as dust, pollen and pet dander; it won't fix damp, and it doesn't make smoking indoors safe.

Pros and cons

What I like

  • Very quiet 22dB sleep mode with the display off
  • Strong CADR for its size
  • Auto mode driven by a PM2.5 sensor
  • App control and scheduling

What I don't

  • Filters are an ongoing cost
  • Short power cord, according to Mumsnet's reviewer
  • Does nothing for damp or humidity
