The report card

  1. Picture & night vision25% of score7.8

1080p camera and a 5-inch 1080p screen, which Mumsnet testers praised for clarity.

  2. Connection & reliability20% of score8.3

Closed FHSS link with no Wi-Fi to drop out, and a quoted range of up to 960ft.

  3. Alerts & smart features15% of score5.6

Sound-activated screen and basic alerts only; no app, no motion or cry analysis.

  4. Ease of use15% of score8.3

Simple to set up and use, though Mumsnet found the baby video that plays on start-up a bit jarring.

  5. Privacy & security10% of score9.5

Nothing connects to the internet, which is as private as monitoring gets.

  6. Value & running costs15% of score7.4

Pricey for a non-Wi-Fi monitor at full price, much better value on offer.

The full review

The Momcozy BM01 is a traditional screen-and-camera monitor done well. There's no Wi-Fi and no app: the camera talks to a 5-inch handheld screen over a closed 2.4GHz FHSS link, so there's nothing to hack remotely and nothing to go wrong when the broadband does.

On paper both the camera and the screen are 1080p, and Mumsnet named it its best non-Wi-Fi monitor, with testers praising the video and audio. The camera gives a full 360 degree view, there's 2x and 4x digital zoom, and you can add up to four cameras and watch them split-screen, which is handy if a second child comes along.

Battery life is a strength. Momcozy quotes around 11.5 hours with the screen on and 22 hours with it off and sound on, and VOX mode wakes the screen when your baby cries. Mother&Baby's testers singled out the two-way talk, too.

The downsides are the flip side of its simplicity: you can't check in from outside the house, and there are no smart alerts. At around £160 full price it's also dear for a non-Wi-Fi monitor, so it's worth waiting for one of its regular offers.
