The full review

The Spectra S1 is a bedside-style double pump, sold here by Spectra Baby UK. Spectra describes it as hospital grade, with suction up to 250mmHg, 12 vacuum levels, a massage mode to trigger let-down and adjustable cycle speed. It runs from the mains or its built-in battery (about three hours on a full charge), and there's a night light and timer for night sessions.

It uses a closed system with backflow protectors to keep milk out of the tubing, and it switches itself off after 30 minutes. The trade-off is weight: at around 1.3kg (2.9lb) it's portable around the house rather than in a handbag, and you only get 24mm shields in the box.

Owners love it. About nine in ten of the 100-plus reviews on Spectra's UK shop give it four or five stars, and a long-term review of the US S1 Plus by Pumping Schedule praised its strong, gentle suction and quiet motor. That review also found the battery's run time dropped noticeably after heavy use over most of a year, and that the standard flanges are too big for many users.

If you don't need the battery, the mains-only Spectra S2 does a similar job for around £140.
