The report card

  1. Picture & night vision25% of score7.4

The 7-inch screen is only 720p, though Mumsnet testers still rated the picture; the app gets the full 1080p feed.

  2. Connection & reliability20% of score7.2

Works with or without Wi-Fi, but reviewers found the direct signal patchy in bigger homes.

  3. Alerts & smart features15% of score6.6

Sound and motion alerts plus temperature and humidity readings; no sleep tracking.

  4. Ease of use15% of score8.2

Remote pan, tilt and zoom, a colour night light and lullabies, on a screen you can read across the room.

  5. Privacy & security10% of score7.6

Runs entirely offline if you like; the app is optional.

  6. Value & running costs15% of score8.4

Around £150 for a big-screen hybrid with no subscription is fair.

The full review

The RM7766HD is VTech's big-screen hybrid. The camera streams directly to a 7-inch parent unit, and the free MyVTech Baby Plus app lets you watch on your phone too, with no fees or subscriptions.

The screen is the reason to buy it. It's large enough to glance at from across the room, and the camera pans 360 degrees and tilts up to 110 degrees by remote, with a wide-angle lens. VTech adds a colour night light, a couple of lullabies and ambient sounds, two-way talk and a temperature sensor. It won Gold for Best Baby Monitor at the Mother&Baby Awards 2024.

There are compromises. The parent unit screen is 720p, with the 1080p picture reserved for the app, and VTech quotes up to 12 hours of video streaming from the battery. Mumsnet's tester found the signal in direct mode 'not the best', and Mother&Baby flagged limited range in larger homes, so it suits flats and average-sized houses best.

If you like the idea of Nanit's overhead view without the subscription, VTech also sells the RM7787HD, which mounts over the cot and has a 7-inch 720p screen, for around £170.
